Thesis 1: If you cannot preach without using a powerpoint presentation during your sermon, you cannot preach!

Explanation: Always relying on a picture to explain a sermon illustration either means the preacher is lazy, or he does not have the vocabulary nor the grasp of the English language he needs to explain and express the point. The whole auditory vs. visual learner distinction behind the justification of using pictures is questionable and over blown in its importance. ‘…Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.’ Rom 10:17 (ESV)

  1. As useful as ppt can be it can very easily become a crutch for lazy preaching, as you say. An equal danger is that it can result in lazy engagement in the Word by the congregation. May we never enable such laziness in either direction!

I have used ppt a few times and found some benefit to it in preaching. It’s not bad in and of itself if both the strengths AND weaknesses are considered. That said I haven’t felt like anything’s been “lesser” in my sermons for the year and a half I’ve not used ppt slides.
